INSIDES

Our wellbeing is a mystery. The search for balance and wisdom we attribute to our ego. But organs drive the body and the mind to its ultimate destiny. How we feel, how we manifest and how we die, all is written by our Insides.

In her first major body of work, fiber artist Kate Therrian explores the form of the human internal organs. Using the traditional embroidery method of cross-stitching, the organs are depicted in their natural form and their parts anatomically labeled.

The artist uses this medium to explore the connection, or rather disconnect, that humans have with their own bodies. One will most likely never see the inside of their body unless they have suffered major trauma, which as a species often makes us unable to grapple with our own insides as they directly relate to our mortality.

Through this work, Therrian spends time on the craft, paying homage to the structures that keep us alive but are rarely acknowledged in their true form. Incorporating minute details that recall the intricate origins of anatomical illustrations, Therrian captures the beauty of the body beyond accepted scientific abbreviation.

Each work is meticulously created by hand using embroidery floss on Aida cloth.

re/generate

re/GENERATE is an outdoor exhibition centered in the heart of Pratt Institute’s Brooklyn campus featuring the work of graduating Spring 2019 Photography Seniors. The unique scale, 90 inches high and spanning widths up to 150 inches, challenges the students to address the impact and significance of their work in a larger than life arena. Highlighting the scope of photographic traditions explored in the program’s curriculum, the exhibition presents a glimpse into each student’s practice as they work toward their final thesis exhibitions. Conceptualized and curated by Kate Therrian.

genz

GenZ is an outdoor exhibition centered in the heart of Pratt Institute’s Brooklyn campus designed by AOS Graphic Design student Scott Stegman. The unique scale, 90 inches high and spanning widths up to 1300 inches, challenged Stegman to address the impact and significance of the featured works by Spring 2019 Associate Degree Program graduates in a larger than life arena.

This work was inspired by the movement around the Pratt Brooklyn campus and the generator itself. The design has no beginning or end. It seamlessly flows as the viewer walks around its boarders while mirroring their journey back to them. Conceptualized and curated by Kate Therrian.
